Responsibilities:

  • Provides oversight for all technical, operational and administrative functions of the Blood Bank
  • Responsible for the overall direction, supervision and work performance of technical staff
  • Recruits, selects, and onboards new employees
  • Responsible for assuring all testing and component preparation in the laboratory is performed according to established operating procedures in compliance with external regulatory agencies
  • Oversees the development and implementation of new programs, methods, tests, instruments, and procedures
  • Troubleshoots complex blood product dispensing and administration issues that arise
  • Works closely with Medical Director and Transfusion Medicine physicians
  • Participates in root cause analyses and in the development of new and revised policies and procedures
  • Ensures all Blood Bank policies and procedures are compliant with FDA, DPH, AABB, and JC regulatory requirements
  • Collaborates closely with Blood Donor Center Leadership to facilitate productive and effective interactions between the Donor Center and Blood Bank operations in support of institutional blood collection goals
  • Views blood utilization trends by clinical service to identify opportunities to improve blood product utilization, including modification of transfusion guidelines
  • Assists in the development of the annual operating and capital budgets and provides leadership in the development, implementation, and monitoring of cost savings initiatives
  • Investigates new technologies and national benchmarking trends and ensures successful participation with local and national Hemovigilance initiatives
  • Attends workshops and professional meetings (e.g. AABB), reviews professional publications, participates in professional societies

Requirements:

  • MT(ASCP)SBB required with a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related field
  • Minimum of seven (7) years technical Blood Bank experience and four (4) years experience as a Blood Bank clincal supervisor
  • Excellent skills and experience in all phases of Blood Banking
  • The supervisory and managerial abilities necessary to direct and coordinate activities of personnel
  • Ability to work independently to troubleshoot issues and solve problems
  • Understanding of requirements of regulatory agencies
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with co-workers, subordinates, physicians, health care workers, outside visitors and students
  • Work is mainly in a small office adjacent to a crowded laboratory
  • Periodic emergent work and shortages of staff and blood products contribute to a high-stress environment in the laboratory
